Mona K. Sutphen
Mona Sutphen is Managing Director of Stonebridge International LLC, an international strategic advisory firm based in Washington, DC. Prior to Stonebridge, Ms. Sutphen was Director of Strategic Planning and Policy for Currenex, an electronic global currency exchange for the institutional forex market, where she focused on international regulatory issues and government/central bank sales. A Foreign Service officer from 1991-2000, she served as Special Assistant to former National Security Adviser Samuel R. Berger and as an Advisor and Deputy Chief-of-Staff to former UN Ambassador Bill Richardson at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. In both positions, she was involved in U.S. policy formulation on a range of issues and crises, including the Balkans, Iraq, Middle East, China, and international economic policy. Other assignments included the Office of the High Representative in Sarajevo, where she worked on implementation of the civilian provisions of the Dayton Peace Accords immediately following the Balkans conflict. She also served at the State Department Human Rights Bureau, where she was responsible for bilateral human rights policy toward Southeast Asia and eastern and southern Africa. Ms. Sutphen was posted at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand where she worked as both a consular and political officer.
Ms. Sutphen holds a B.A. in International Relations from Mount Holyoke College and a M.Sc. in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics. She is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the Women's Foreign Policy Group, and serves on the board of the International Human Rights Law Group. She has participated in a number of public debates on foreign policy issues at the Carnegie Endowment, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the Council on Foreign Relations. Her article, How Did This Happen? Terrorism and the New War co-authored with Sandy Berger was published by Foreign Affairs/Public Affairs, November 2001.
