Jalen Johnson (RBS 2018) Featured on LEGO

Jalen Johnson, one of our distinguished scholars from the Ron Brown Scholars Class of 2018, was recently featured in an article on LEGO’s website. Jalen’s journey exemplifies how passion, creativity, and community can shape a fulfilling career.

A Journey Powered by Play

Jalen’s connection to LEGO® bricks began in childhood when play was the foundation for lasting friendships and boundless creativity. His early memories of building a vibrant LEGO city with his best friend—a city complete with its laws and currencies—foreshadowed the innovative and collaborative spirit he brings to his work today.

Now an Associate Key Account Manager at LEGO, Jalen combines his love of creativity with a knack for data analysis. “One of the ways I get to create in my work is by using storytelling techniques to convey the data in a way that resonates with our audience,” he shared. Jalen contributes to the company’s mission of bringing playfulness and imagination to children and families worldwide through his role.

Championing Inclusion and Community

Jalen’s commitment to creating inclusive environments shines within his work at LEGO and beyond. A strong advocate for collaboration, he spearheaded a team brainstorming day that fostered connection and innovation among his colleagues. He is also actively involved in several of LEGO’s Inclusion Networks, including Race, Ethnicity, and Cultural Heritage (REACH), Rainbow Builders (LGBTQ+), and Accessibility. These groups provide a space for employees to connect, support one another, and celebrate diversity.

“I’m a big believer in the power of community,” Jalen said. “These networks allow me to show up to work as my most authentic self and reflect LEGO’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment.”

Building a Sustainable Future

Jalen’s passion for sustainability also aligns with LEGO’s values. He highlighted the company’s LEGO Replay program, which encourages customers to recycle and reuse LEGO bricks to reduce environmental waste while promoting the joy of play for future generations.

“The LEGO Replay program is AMAZING,” Jalen enthused. ” It reinforces the idea that LEGO bricks are meant to be shared, cherished, and passed down through generations.”

A Legacy of Impact

Jalen’s story is a testament to the power of blending purpose with passion. His journey from an imaginative child playing with LEGO bricks to a leader driving meaningful change at the company is truly inspiring. We are proud to celebrate his achievements and the impact he continues to make on his community and beyond.

Congratulations, Jalen, on this well-deserved recognition! Keep building, creating, and inspiring.

In Memoriam:
Cal LaRoche (1946–2025)

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Cal LaRoche, a brilliant and dedicated advisor and champion of the Ron Brown Scholar Program, who left us on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025.

Born in New York in January 1946, Cal graduated from Central State University in Ohio, where he joined the Eta Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. His career spanned decades of leadership and innovation, beginning at the National Security Agency and continuing through key roles at IBM, SkyTel Communications, and The Orkand Corporation.

A visionary entrepreneur, Cal later co-founded DC Ventures and Associates.

His commitment to service was unwavering. Cal chaired the Boards of Trustees at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and Norwood School and served with distinction for 15 years on the Advisory Board of the Ron Brown Scholar Program. His leadership extended to the Beta Mu, Boulé Foundation Board, where he served as Chair, and to Patients For Affordable Drugs, where he was a founding board member and Treasurer.

An avid golfer and advocate for equity in the sport, Cal co-founded the Pro-Duffer/Carter Foundation Scholarship to promote diversity in golf. A long-time member of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, he was as passionate about creating opportunity as he was about the game itself.

Cal’s legacy is carried on by his beloved family: his mother, Lucille “Gloria” David; his wife, Esperanza, and their sons, CJ and Ethan; his former wife, Cheryl LaRoche; their daughters, Gina LaRoche, Renee LaRoche-Morris, and Danielle LaRoche; six grandchildren; and his siblings. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering belief in the potential of young people will remain an enduring part of the Ron Brown Scholar community.

We are forever grateful for Cal’s enduring support, leadership, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, generosity, and deep humanity. He will be deeply missed.
