SPRING

Ronald H. Brown American Journey Awards

The Ronald H. Brown American Journey Awards (hereafter referred to as the “American Journey Awards”) was established in 2009 to honor outstanding Americans who exemplify the vision and transformative ideals of Ronald H. Brown (1941-1996). American Journey Awards are granted to individuals who have developed opportunities and fostered the achievements of others. Like the late Ron Brown, these role models demonstrate through their life experiences the importance of mentoring, serving and nurturing a network of leaders in America. They embody the spirit of the Program’s mission and serve as a model to which Scholars should aspire. Held during Selection Weekend, the American Journey Awards attract a cross-section of distinguished professionals from the D.C. metro area and beyond.

Selection Weekend

Program finalists attend Selection Weekend, which is held during the penultimate weekend in March. Selection Weekend includes a battery of panel interviews, receptions, formal and informal leisure activities for finalists, and the Ronald H. Brown American Journey Awards.

Guided Pathway Support Program College Decision Day Celebration

Each May 1st, the Guided Pathway Support Program virtually convenes its graduating high school seniors to celebrate National College Decision Day to announce the colleges they have chosen to complete their undergraduate studies. This virtual commencement event culminates months of hard work applying for scholarships, researching colleges, writing essays, and striving to make their college goals a reality.

SUMMER

Ron Brown Leaders Summit

Leaders Summit brings together Scholars, Captains, and Alumni who participate in our Ron Brown Leaders Network with corporate partners networking and professional development. Partners share valuable insight and career advice with our young leaders while introducing them to professional opportunities within each organization.

Triennial and Annual Conferences

Annual and triennial conferences that bring Scholars, mentors, experts, and staff together in real-time are eagerly anticipated events. As Scholars are dispersed across the country, the conferences are an important part of the Program’s strategy to continuously build the bridges that connect people to one another.

Triennial conventions have been held in Aspen, Colorado; Hancock, Massachusetts; Charlottesville Virginia; and the District of Columbia with themes ranging from Defining Leadership for a New Millennium, The Value of One, The Power of All and The Ties That Bound Us, the message behind each theme was clear: our Scholars use networks to grow effectively, personally, and collectively.

FALL

Scholarship Application Window Opens

Each fall, the Ron Brown Scholar Program launches its signature scholarship application, opening the door for talented, service-oriented high school seniors to join our family of Scholars. This highly competitive opportunity provides financial support, mentorship, leadership development, and access to a lifelong network of excellence. It’s the first step in empowering the next generation of Black leaders to make a transformative impact in their communities and beyond.

In Memoriam:
Cal LaRoche (1946–2025)

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Cal LaRoche, a brilliant and dedicated advisor and champion of the Ron Brown Scholar Program, who left us on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025.

Born in New York in January 1946, Cal graduated from Central State University in Ohio, where he joined the Eta Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. His career spanned decades of leadership and innovation, beginning at the National Security Agency and continuing through key roles at IBM, SkyTel Communications, and The Orkand Corporation.

A visionary entrepreneur, Cal later co-founded DC Ventures and Associates.

His commitment to service was unwavering. Cal chaired the Boards of Trustees at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and Norwood School and served with distinction for 15 years on the Advisory Board of the Ron Brown Scholar Program. His leadership extended to the Beta Mu, Boulé Foundation Board, where he served as Chair, and to Patients For Affordable Drugs, where he was a founding board member and Treasurer.

An avid golfer and advocate for equity in the sport, Cal co-founded the Pro-Duffer/Carter Foundation Scholarship to promote diversity in golf. A long-time member of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, he was as passionate about creating opportunity as he was about the game itself.

Cal’s legacy is carried on by his beloved family: his mother, Lucille “Gloria” David; his wife, Esperanza, and their sons, CJ and Ethan; his former wife, Cheryl LaRoche; their daughters, Gina LaRoche, Renee LaRoche-Morris, and Danielle LaRoche; six grandchildren; and his siblings. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering belief in the potential of young people will remain an enduring part of the Ron Brown Scholar community.

We are forever grateful for Cal’s enduring support, leadership, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, generosity, and deep humanity. He will be deeply missed.
